Absolute essential oils are solvent extracted aromatherapy oils. This multi-step process begins by extracting the biomass with a non-polar solvent such as hexane. When the hexane has evaporated a waxy product is obtained called the concrete.

The concrete is then extracted using ethanol. The polarity of the ethanol allows the extraction of the volatile aromatics from the concrete, leaving behind the non-polar plant waxes which do not dissolve well in ethanol.

The ethanol is then evaporated leaving behind the Absolute.
